The Murmuring Deep by Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg Schocken, 2009. 480 pages.
Review taken from BarnesandNoble.com.
From one of the most innovative and acclaimed biblical commentators at work today, here is a revolutionary analysis of the intersection between religion and psychoanalysis in the stories of the men and women of the Bible.

In her literary analysis of the Biblical text Avivah Zornberg draws concepts from Freud, Winnicott, Laplanche, and other psychoanalytic thinkers to give us a new understanding of the desires and motivations of the men and women whose stories form the basis of the Bible. Through close readings of the biblical and midrashic texts,

In her analysis of the stories of Bereishit, Ruth, and Esther, Zornberg examines how the characters communicate with the world around them, with God, and with the various parts of their selves. Zornberg offers fascinating insights into the interaction between consciousness and unconsciousness.

Hip Kosher by Ronnie Fein, De capo Press, 2008. 288 pages.
Who would have foreseen that eating and cooking kosher would be so cool?
The latest kosher food trend is not fueled by the traditional Jewish market. The people at the forefront of this trend are not faith-based observers of Jewish dietary law. The newest kosher crowd is made up of Muslims, Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah Witnesses, vegetarians, vegans, those with food allergies, lactose intolerant, the health conscious, people concerned with animal welfare, organic foodies and those who may believe that being kosher will help them connect with the more spiritual side of the food they are consuming.

No K foods here. No kugels, kreplach, knishes, kneidel or kishke. Here you will find a fusion of the best of all ethnic and international fare with readily available ingredients at the supermarket. You will be surprised at just what foods have a hechsher if you look.

The Koren Sacks Siddur edited translated and commentary by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Koren Publishing, 2009. Standard Size. 1200 pages

Since the printing of the revolutionary Tanach in 1962, Eliyahu Koren and Koren Publishing have helped usher Jewish printing into a new era of artistry and spirituality. In 1981 they furthered the legacy with the first printing of the Koren Siddur, a prayer book that treated the prayers as poetry laying them out in an artistic way that made them easier to read and understand.

Now with the help of the Chief Rabbi of England Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks, that wonderful siddur has been translated into English providing a beautiful and informative prayer book that appeals to the modern Zionist Jew. The font is the same beautifully designed font Eliyau used in 1981, and is printed in what Koren Publishing calls their “Bible” paper, which has added high cotton and linen fibers to increase strength yet maintain thinness.

Food for the Soul, Traditional Jewish Wisdom for Healthy Eating
Gefen Publishing House 2008, Chana Rubin RD
In the book Food for the Soul, dietician Chana Rubin offers good guidelines for a healthy lifestyle. We all know that this means eating healthy, exercising, and losing weight. That's fine in theory but how exactly can we accomplish this when leading a food-centered kosher/observant lifestyle. The focus on these issues makes this book a must-read for the kosher diner and homemaker.

Rubin addresses the issue of Shabbat and holidays with tips on serving foods that are healthier while retaining the traditional menus. There is a section on Pesach food preparation and even some tips for fast days. The pages are peppered with quotes from Jewish sources including the Rambam, Rav Kook, Rav Menachem Schneerson, the Mishna, etc.
This is added incentive for following the suggestions.

The Shidduch Crisis, Causes and Cures by DR. Michael J. Salamon
Urim Publications, 2008, hardcover, 141 pages.
What color is your Shabbat tablecloth? Does your mother stack her dishes on Shabbat? These are questions you might be asked if you begin to date in the frum community. Is this a useful or responsible way to screen potential mates? Not according to Dr. Michael J. Salamon, the author of a new book on the growing problems in the shidduch (matchmaking) system in the orthodox community.

Written from the perspective of a frum psychologist, The Shidduch Crisis, is a breath of fresh air for many religious Jews surprised and dismayed by the rigid rules of shidduch dating that have been filtering in from the Charedi community. The book, already an underground classic, analyzes the failures in the
shidduch system and suggests some solutions.

Why I am a Zionist by Gil Troy, Bronfman Jewish Education Centre, 2006. 257 pages.
In his fascinating book “Why I am a Zionist” Gil Troy a professor of History at McGill University, redefines the term "Zionist" for a new generation. This is the third edition of the book Troy initially wrote in 2002, in answer to virulent attacks on the State of Israel's right to exist in the wake of world-wide terrorism.

The book begins with a reprinted article Troy wrote in the Montreal Gazette celebrating Israel’s 53rd anniversary. The column entitled “I am a Zionist: A Twenty-First Century Manifesto” is an uplifting affirmation of Troy's belief in the State of Israel. The negative response to his article showed that our enemies regard Zionism as an act of aggression.
